External on-camera monitors have become an essential tool on set. Small HD has always been a leader in the field, and once again have released a groundbreaking new monitor set to take the industry by storm. As a small intimate crew or a one-man-band, I'm sure there have been times where you wished you could use your phone as a reliable monitor on your smaller camera set ups or even as an additional directors monitor. Small HD really lives up to its name with the new 502 which is as small and light as a smartphone, but with the quality and reliability of a professional grade monitor. It features a full HD 1920×1080 resolution screen with a pixel density of 441 pixels per inch, as well as HD-SDI and HDMI input/output/cross-convert, and it's powered by Canon batteries. It builds on the 3D LUT functionality of their popular DP7-PRO Series and is perfect for cameras like the Canon C100/ 5D Mark III, Sony A7S and Panasonic GH4. It is also great for gimbal and shoulder-rig work where you want to keep weight and bulk down as well- perfect for the Ronin handheld stabiliser. As stated by Small HD: “As far as color and contrast are concerned, the 5-inch display is again, best-in-class. The 502’s LCD display is able to produce 85% NTSC Color Gamut (greater than the REC. 709 color standard), rivalling the color capabilities of OLED technology.” Menu navigation is done through the built-in joystick. The configuration system allows you to create and store up to 8 presets including focus or exposure aids and 3D LUTs.
